1/22/2019 | Modulation of temozolomide dose differentially affects T cell response to immune checkpoint inhibition.
Glioblastomas (GBM) are malignant tumors of the brain. Many patients with GBM have profound suppressed immune systems due to the effects of the tumor. These patients can have T cell counts as low as patients with AIDS! The most common chemotherapy used for patients with GBM is called temozolomide and can cause further immunosuppression since it kills healthy immune cells as well as tumorous cells. Dr. Aida Karachi in our lab has found that temozolomide causes T cells to be dysfunctional. Our research shows that while TMZ can slow or even stop tumor growth, it comes at a price. This is why we need to work together to find more effective and less harmful treatments for cancers like GBM!
